Among Poe's most remarkable
works is his tale of the Antarctic seas called "The Adventures of
Arthur Gordon Pym." I had always supposed the story to be pure
fiction of the most fantastic sort; but Cap
tain Len Guy assured me that it must be at least founded upon fact (...)
Briefly summarized, the narrative
of Arthur Gordon Pym tells how Pym, after many disastrous adventures
was left with only one companion

they found a gap in the great southern ice barrier which, surrounding
the South Pole, usually bars all further advance at about 73° south.

Non ci sono dubbi che la seguente storia sarà
raccolta con incredulità, ma io penso che il pubblico debba essere messo
al corrente dei fatti narrati in "Un mistero antartico". Il pubblico è
libero di credere o meno, a proprio piacere.

Tra i lavori più interessanti
di Poe c'è il suo racconto "Le avventure di Arthur Gordon Pym". Io
avevo sempre supposto che la storia fosse pura
finzione del genere più fantastico, ma il capitano Len Guy mi assicurò
che un fatto almeno è fondato (.....)
Riassumendo brevemente, il racconto di Arthur Gordon Pym narra
di come lo stesso Pym fu lasciato con un solo compagno.....
Per alcune circostanze,
fortunate o sfortunate, i due trovarono un varco nella grande barriera
glaciale che circonda il Polo Sud, a circa 73° sud. Perforando la barriera
ghiacciata i due coraggiosi esploratori trovarono un mare aperto....... |
